On his initial day in his new role, Zohran Mamdani vowed to “reinvent” New York City, promising “a new era” and an audacious start to his term.

An Unprecedented Mayor

The young democratic socialist, who was a virtually unknown state assemblyman, is the city's first Muslim mayor. He also made history by being the inaugural to be sworn in using the Qur'an.

“A time such as this comes rarely and even more uncommon is it that the people themselves whose hands are upon the mechanisms of progress,” Mamdani added.

Ignoring counsel to be modest, the mayor asserted: “I will do no such thing. The only expectation I seek to redefine is that of small expectations. Beginning today we will rule with courage and vision.”

Governing with Socialist Principles

Mamdani openly embraced his socialist politics. “I was elected as a socialist leader and I will lead as one. I will not forsake my principles for worry of being called extreme,” he proclaimed to an enthusiastic response.

The inauguration was a two-part event, starting with a late-night oath-taking in a former subway station. He was formally sworn in on the steps of city hall by political ally Bernie Sanders, who praised Mamdani's ascent as a victory over powerful interests.

A Sweeping Blueprint

Mamdani now begins one of the most unrelenting jobs in American politics, with a plan promising:

• Subsidized daycare
• Free buses
• A rent freeze for about 1 million households
• A trial program of municipally-operated grocery stores

The estimated $10 billion price tag of these services may pose a hurdle to finance. Mamdani has vowed to tax more heavily the city's top earners and big business. However, as a municipality subject to the state government, he will require the backing of Governor Kathy Hochul.

Navigating External Challenges

The new mayor also faces concern from some members of the Jewish community alarmed by his past stances regarding Israel. Sensitivities were highlighted during the transition when a appointments director resigned over offensive past tweets.

Mamdani has attempted to address these concerns by convincing Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch to stay on, avoiding the appearance of losing a top Jewish official.

On the national stage, former President Donald Trump has labeled Mamdani a “socialist” and threatened withholding government money. Despite this, a prior encounter between the two was reportedly surprisingly cordial.

The Core Challenges of Leadership

In the end, New York mayors are evaluated by their ability in delivering essential functions: trash collection, curbing the rat infestation, fixing potholes, and ensuring reliable subway service.

Outgoing Mayor Eric Adams touted his team's public safety record, pointing to record low numbers of murders and shootings in 2025, with murders recorded.

As his work begins, Mamdani and his wife will relocate from their Astoria apartment to the historic Gracie Mansion. The previous occupant offered a quirky piece of advice about a supposed friendly ghost in the home, which reportedly only troubles those who fail to “do right by the city.”

Mamdani ended his address with a direct statement: “The work has only just begun.”
