The Baldur's Gate 3 Creators Reveal a New Divinity, Calling it Their Biggest RPG Ever

The anticipation surrounding this year's gaming ceremony reached a fever pitch, particularly after host Geoff Keighley shared a puzzling image of a desert monolith. The question has now been solved. Larian Studios is creating a completely new Divinity game.

Titled simply Divinity, the game was debuted with a bold trailer packed with intense imagery, from a burning man to scenes of revelry and the literal descent into chaos.

A Different Direction

Anyone hoping for Divinity Original Sin 3, that is not happening. Larian stated ahead of time that a third Original Sin game to its venerated RPGs is not on the cards right now.

However, the developer described this new Divinity as a evolution of the core franchise. This distinction implies that the team might be crafting a real-time experience rather than another turn-based title. At this moment, it remains theory, as only a teaser video is available.

The Legacy of Divinity

The Divinity series is highly rated and it's fair to claim it pioneered the recent resurgence of complex computer role-playing games. These games are defined by rich lore, branching plots, and flexible progression—qualities that subsequently reached new heights in games like Baldur's Gate 3.

While its universe is traditional swords and sorcery, what really distinguishes Divinity apart is the remarkable agency bestowed upon the player.

Where many modern RPGs have simplified options, Divinity is full of niche playthroughs you can achieve if you're playing as a specific type of character with a unique decision path.

The series is also wonderfully open-ended, letting players to experiment both in story and combat. Nearly every quest can be completed in a variety of manners, sometimes in unexpected fashion.

  • You might progress the story because you recalled something a non-human character said.
  • Or, you could bypass a challenge by moving environmental hazards in a unorthodox way.

A New Chapter Begins

It is these creative systems that lead fans and critics to hail games like Divinity Original Sin 2 as one of the best role-playing games ever made. Now, the RPG community can get ready for more where that came from in this esteemed franchise.
