Our planet could be under strain, but optimism persists. A fresh honor from the science, music and arts festival Starmus seeks to encourage the public to take action.

The medal is to be awarded in honour of the esteemed British primatologist who died recently. It will recognise those who protect life on Earth.

Honoring a Legacy

The first recipients are slated for announcement at the upcoming Starmus event in the Canary Islands, which will run from October 17th to 22nd the coming year.

According to statements that Jane Goodall, who was a member of the festival's board, had supported the medal's establishment. “The vision behind this award, and the festival being tasked with organising it, was Jane's wish,” a statement said. “She said she would like this to happen. And I think because of the very special bond she shared with us.”

“This medal aims to highlight ongoing initiatives carried out to build an environment a better place for people, animals and the environment and foster motivation to carry on such efforts,” said a family member.

Structure and Vision

A co-founder of Starmus noted that the medal – unveiled at a scientific institution – will likely encompass various fields.

“It will be very much similar to the Stephen Hawking award for science communication that we created a decade past,” he explained. Jane Goodall was an honoree of that award.

Expressing concern about the future of the planet, one figure stated, “Frankly, it’s very hard to feel hopeful. Present governance globally represents a dismissal of evidence. This situation undermines the world’s efforts.”

“To be honest, things don’t look particularly bright which means we need to commence thinking again, with greater urgency regarding the impact of human activity. This concern encompasses not just climate change, that’s the entire manner in which we interact with our environment.”

Following an Example

As a result, observers believe it was an opportune moment to follow Goodall’s example. “It is believed that when we’re awarding the prize, the focus will be on this essential spirit of Jane’s – that was her priority, to transform how we regard the other animals with which we share the planet.”

A major topic at present was highlighted of misinformation. The theme of the upcoming Starmus festival will be “the pursuit of factual understanding”.

“We realised that truth has become contested where political interests is involved. This is a perilous development,” it was said. “The science of climate remains a scientific discipline; you cannot have any influence from politics in climate science.”

Hope and Determination

The goal is that this honor will inspire concrete steps. “It focuses on inspiring individuals to get involved and to show concern and to work toward these goals, really. Regardless of if we’re optimistic, we have to focus on working our utmost,” it was added. “Be prepared for setbacks, but you still have to work toward success.”

A family member engaged in conservation work shared optimism that “given direction and once enabled, humanity can be conscientious guardians of our planet”, pointing to the programs of an institute which, in addition to its projects, helps the next generation get involved with their community, animals, and the natural world.

“As Jane Goodall often emphasized, our daily actions are significant and the responsibility lies with us the kind of difference we choose to create,” it was stated. “There is still time and the Starmus Jane Goodall Earth medal will provide inspiration and increase understanding about beneficial initiatives that people are making.”
